How to Use Notion Number Property: A Practical Guide
The Number property in Notion is a flexible way to manage numeric data. In this post, we’ll cover how to add the Number property, customize its formats and display types and explore some practical use cases.
Adding the Number Property
To incorporate a Number Property into your Notion database or page:
Open your Notion database.
Click on Add a property in the database.
Choose Number from the property type list. Name your property for easy identification.
Customizing Number Formats
Notion allows you to customize the Number Property in several ways:
Number: Displays raw numbers (e.g., 123).
Number with commas: Adds commas to large numbers for easier reading (e.g., 10,000).
Percent: Converts a number into a percentage (e.g., 0.75 becomes 75%).
Currency: Adds a currency symbol (e.g., US Dollar, Euro, Pound) to the number (e.g., $100, €100, £100).
To customize a Number property format, click on the column’s header, select Edit property and Number Format, and choose the appropriate option based on the data you’re working with.
Display Types
Notion offers three ways to show the Number property:
Number - Shows the exact numeric value.
Bar - A horizontal bar that visually represents a completion percentage, filling up based on your number and a defined maximum.
Ring - A circular ring that fills up based on your number, visually representing a percentage.
To use the Bar and Ring display types effectively, you can customize them further:
In the Divide by field, set a maximum value that the progress will be measured against (e.g., set it to 100 to display percentage progress).
You can also select a color for the bar or ring, which helps to differentiate between different metrics or categories visually.
If desired, you can check the option show number inside the Bar or Ring display, so both the progress and the raw number are visible at a glance.
Use Cases
Goal Tracking: Use the Bar or Ring to visually track progress toward goals like project completion or fitness targets.
Budgeting: Track expenses using the Currency format and visualize budget usage with a Ring to show how much remains.
Project Management: Monitor task completion percentages with the Bar display to see how close you are to project milestones.
Inventory: Use Number format with commas to clearly track large stock quantities and visualize depletion with a Bar.
Fitness: Track daily goals like steps or calories with a Ring showing your progress toward the target.
Conclusion
The Number Property in Notion offers versatile formatting and display options, making it easy to track and visualize data like budgets, goals, and project progress, helping you stay organized and efficient.
